Wangari Maathai, an environmentalist, Nobel Peace Prize-winner and founder of the grassroots Green Belt Movement will present a lecture "Sustainable Development, Democracy and Peace: A Critical Link." The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is a joint presentation of the University Lectures, the Geoffrey O. Seltzer Lecture, and Syracuse Symposium. It is co-sponsored by the Syracuse University Chancellor's Office, Center for Environmental Policy and Administration, Hendricks Chapel, and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

The conversation on solutions to world conflict continues with an address by Cindy Sheehan, peace activist and founding member of Gold Star Families for Peace. She will be joined by Cynthia Enloe, feminist scholar, for a Syracuse Symposium address presented in cooperation with the 2006 Feminism and War Conference (a Ray Smith Symposium, Oct. 19-21), Hendricks Chapel, and the Women's Studies Program.

Feminism and War Conference

This three-day conference will include lectures and presentations from Angela Davis, Cynthia Enloe, Cindy Sheehan, and Zillah Eisenstein. The event follows the mission of the University's Women's Studies Program, which aims to help promote knowledge about the complex ways that gender ideas and practices shape the world.
